Liviko has a unique history that has seen it\u00a0survive wars and challenging times. Throughout the years, Liviko has been in public and private ownership, and from 2000, the alcohol producer belongs to the ambitious NG Investeeringud, where Liviko has become a successful international alcohol group.<\/p>\n

Research-based product development and a high-tech laboratory play an important role alongside the knowledge and skills passed on from master to apprentice for 128 years. The quality of our workshop is attested by Vana Tallinn liqueur, Viru Valge vodka and Crafter\u2019s gins, which have become hallmarks of Estonia. We feel honoured that Estonia is known around the world thanks to products lovingly created by Liviko.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n

MAMMA ILSE <\/h2>\r\n
\r\n
\r\n

Distillation technology has been used here since Liviko\u2019s early days. The copper pot still known as Mamma Ilse has been in use for a hundred years, named in honour of Ilse Maar, a long-time master distiller at Liviko. As one of the creators of the legendary liqueur Vana Tallinn, Ilse Maar is affectionately known as the grandmother of Vana Tallinn. The historic pot still has been retired, and can now be seen in a place of honour at the Liviko Museum. The modern pieces of distillation equipment that replaced Mamma Ilse were christened Mahta and Elfride, after Liviko\u2019s distinguished master distillers Mahta Laidvee and Elfride Kingisepp.<\/p>\n

Mamma Ilse was also used for the first-ever steam distillation with a botanical basket: this centenarian copper lady did the main work to produce the vodka Rukkilill, created in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\r\n

Historical facts<\/h1>\r\n

The oldest drink in Liviko\u2019s product portfolio is the crystal liqueur K\u00e4nnu Kukk, which has been manufactured using a heated bottling process since 1900. The legendary Vana Tallinn liqueur became one of Estonia\u2019s hallmark products immediately after its creation in 1960.<\/p>\n

The trendsetting Crafter\u2019s London Dry Gin was developed by Liviko in 2015. A few years later, Liviko launched the vibrant Crafter\u2019s Aromatic Flower Gin, which added a dash of colour to the increasingly popular gin trend. Liviko\u2019s product innovation continues. Its latest fruits include the Re-crafted Crafter\u2019s fizzy drink series created in 2019 according to the zero waste<\/em> principle, and establishing a new category in the global beverage industry: Junibeer \u2013 juniper berry beer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n \r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/a>\n\n\r\n

    \r\n In 1962, Viru Valge, a high-quality vodka that would become Estonia\u2019s most renowned and best-known vodka, is created. Four products \u2013 Tea Punch, Tallinn Punch, the LiViKo cocktail and Strawberry Liqueur \u2013 are awarded the Grand Silver Medal at the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy in Moscow. This period also marks the beginning of post-war vodka exports. During the first five years, exports are handled by the foreign trade company V\/O Prodintorg and are limited to Eastern European countries, including the German Democratic Republic, Czechoslovakia and Romania. The exported products are Moskovskaya Osobaya Vodka and Stolichnaya Vodka. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n

    \r\n In 1960, the legendary Vana Tallinn liqueur is created by master liqueur maker Ilse Maar, bottling department manager Bernhard J\u00fcrno and production master Jaan Siimo. Vana Tallinn quickly becomes Liviko\u2019s flagship product. With its distinctive flavour, the liqueur becomes a highly sought-after commodity and a form of informal currency in the Soviet Union, with demand surpassed only by that for bananas. Following the restoration of Estonia\u2019s independence, Vana Tallinn establishes itself as an iconic Estonian product, proudly presented as a gift to foreign visitors and frequently purchased as a souvenir to take abroad. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n

    \r\n Tallinn Fine Spirits Factory (formerly Rosen & Co), located on Mere Boulevard, ceases to operate as an independent company, and its production management is transferred to Tallinn Vodka Factory. The liqueur production unit is relocated from Mere Boulevard to the vodka factory premises on Tartu Road, while the rectification unit continues operating at its original location on Mere Boulevard. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
  • \r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n 1941<\/strong>\r\n

    \r\n During the final two years of the German occupation, from 1943 to 1944, the official name of Tallinn Vodka Factory is Branntweinwerk Reval. The factory produces vodka with alcohol strengths of 40% and 32%, the latter having been introduced in November 1942. Small quantities of 40% Table Vodka are also produced for the army. The company operates under the authority of the General Directorate of Monopolies in Ostland (Generaldirektion der Monopole im Ostland), headquartered in Riga. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
  • \r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n 1940<\/strong>\r\n

    \r\n In January 1940, the factory is officially renamed Tallinn Vodka Factory. In June, the Soviet Union occupies Estonia, but production at the state-owned Tallinn Vodka Factory continues as before. At the time, the factory produces Vodka 40% in 0.25-litre and 0.75-litre bottles, as well as Table Vodka in two strengths, 40% and 45%, both available in 0.5-litre and 0.25-litre bottles. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n

    \r\n State Vodka Factory No. 1 employs 127 people. Two new fully automated bottling lines are purchased from the German company Gebr\u00fcder Sch\u00e4ffler, replacing the semi-automatic lines acquired from the same manufacturer in 1923. Aluminium caps are also introduced for sealing some of the bottles. Reflecting the factory\u2019s modern facilities and success, the staff dining room resembles a restaurant. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n

    \r\n Prohibition is lifted in Finland, and on 9 March, an intergovernmental agreement is signed between Estonia and Finland for the sale of vodka and spirits to the state alcohol monopoly, Oy Alkoholiliike Ab. During March, State Vodka Factory No. 1 exports 460,000 bottles of Estonian vodka, each containing 0.75 litres, to Finland. The Finnish state undertakes to return the bottles and crates to Estonia or provide financial compensation for them. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n

    \r\n By a decision of the Government of the Republic of Estonia on 5 November 1930, State Vodka Factory No. 1 begins producing two varieties of table vodka, with alcohol strengths of 40% and 45%. Both varieties are bottled in two sizes: 0.5 litres and 0.25 litres. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
  • \r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n 1929<\/strong>\r\n

    \r\n As part of a government reform, the factory\u2019s official name is changed from the State Vodka Warehouse to State Vodka Factory No. 1, effective from 1 July 1929. The factory operates under the authority of the Tax Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n

    \r\n In 1924, the factory begins operations with two production lines equipped with the most advanced machinery in the Baltic states. Initially, vodka and spirits are bottled exclusively in 0.75-litre bottles, with a 0.25-litre bottle, popularly known as an asunik, introduced a few years later. The photograph shows the bottling room on the second floor of the State Vodka Warehouse. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n

    \r\n Liviko\u2019s earliest predecessor was Revaler Sprit-Fabrik, a spirit rectification plant established in 1875 on Mere Boulevard, which became the Tallinn Distillery Owners\u2019 Association Rosen & Co. in 1895. In 1921, a separate company specialising in premium spirits, liqueurs and other alcoholic beverages, Tallinna Viinavabrik O\u00dc, was established under Rosen & Co. Its best-known product was the table vodka Stolovoje Vino, which was sold in Berlin, London and Paris, as well as in Helsinki during the 1930s. The most famous customer of Stolovoje Vino in England was the writer Herbert G. Wells, widely regarded as one of the founding figures of science fiction. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
  • \r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n 1920<\/strong>\r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n Prohibition in Estonia ends in June, and at the end of December, the Supply Administration of the Ministry of War transfers the vodka warehouse buildings to the Excise Department of the Ministry of Finance, marking the beginning of the warehouse\u2019s restoration. The company\u2019s official name is the State Vodka Warehouse. Spirits are sold by voucher at licensed shops, dispensed directly into customers\u2019 own containers. Vodka is not produced. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
  • \r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n 1918<\/strong>\r\n

    \r\n 1918\u20131920: Production at the Tallinn Vodka Warehouse is suspended. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
  • \r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n 1914<\/strong>\r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n Following the outbreak of the First World War, prohibition is introduced in the Russian Empire, bringing vodka production to a halt. Only the production of denatured alcohol continues in a separate production unit until the end of 1917. In 1915, an artillery repair workshop for the land forces of Peter the Great\u2019s Naval Fortress is established on the premises of the vodka warehouse. Over the following six years, the warehouse buildings are used in succession by Russian, German and Estonian military institutions. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
  • \r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n 1900<\/strong>\r\n

    \r\n \"\" <\/div> \r\n
    \r\n On 1 July, the state vodka monopoly law comes into force in the three Baltic governorates of the Russian Empire (Estonia, Livonia and Courland). Tallinn State Vodka Warehouse No. 1 begins bottling vodka and drinking alcohol in glass bottles for sale to residents of the Governorate of Estonia. Table vodka (Stolovoje vino) is brought in from St Petersburg and is not produced in Tallinn. Five different bottle sizes are used in production: \u00bc, 1\/20, 1\/40, 1\/100 and 1\/200 of a vedro (an old Russian unit of volume).     \r\n On 25 September 1898 (13 September according to the Old Style calendar), the foundation stone was laid for Tallinn State Vodka Warehouse No. 1 (Revelskii nomer odin kazjonn\u00f5i vinn\u00f5i sklad), marking the beginning of Liviko\u2019s history. The company\u2019s main building, which still houses Liviko\u2019s production facilities today, was constructed between 1898 and 1900. Built from limestone, the building features Neo-Romanesque architectural elements. It was based on a standard design, adapted for Tallinn by architect Rudolf Otto von Kn\u00fcpffer, who was serving as the provincial engineer of the Governorate of Estonia at the time. The vodka warehouse was designed to have an annual production capacity of 300,000 vedros (an old Russian unit of volume), equivalent to approximately 3.7 million litres of vodka. \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/li>\r\n \r\n <\/ul>\r\n
