The traditional New Year\u2019s concert by R\u00e9my Martin and Eesti Kontsert at the Estonia Concert Hall started the year off on a musical high note. Conductor Kaspar M\u00e4nd directed the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, and the audience was delighted by solo performances from soprano Mirjam Mesak and theremin virtuoso Carolina Eyck.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festive New Year\u2019s concert by R\u00e9my Martin and Eesti Kontsert was inspired by fantastic France and the wonderful milieu and vibrant atmosphere of Paris. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are thrilled that conductor Kaspar M\u00e4nd put together an enchantingly French programme, which included beloved soprano Mirjam Mesak and soloist Carolina Eyck, who performed on an exciting and unusual electronic musical instrument \u2013 the theremin. Paris is a city where new and old go hand in hand, and so we started the new year also with a very diverse program under the familiar twinkle of the Estonia Concert Hall\u2019s chandeliers,\u201d said Maarit<\/strong> Kangron<\/strong>, the artistic director of Eesti Kontsert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dazzling New Year\u2019s concert saw soprano Mirjam Mesak perform Claude Debussy\u2019s symphonic Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun<\/em>, Hector Berlioz\u2019s \u201cThe Unknown Island\u201d from the song cycle Summer<\/em> Nights<\/em>, Op. 7, Henri Duparc\u2019s \u201cEcstasy\u201d and Charles Gounod\u2019s \u201cJuliet\u2019s Waltz\u201d from the opera Romeo and Juliet<\/em>. These exquisite pieces were followed by Maurice Ravel\u2019s Noble and Sentimental Waltzes<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The audience was then treated to R\u00e9gis Campo\u2019s Dancefloor With Pulsing<\/em> for the theremin and orchestra with theremin player Carolina Eyck as the soloist. A rousing performance of George Gershwin\u2019s symphonic poem An American in Paris<\/em> stirred emotions. The finale of the charmingly French concert was made memorable by Jacques Ibert\u2019s \u201cRestaurant in the Bois de Boulogne\u201d from the symphonic suite Paris<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe New Year\u2019s concert is a dignified and grand start to [2024 as Estonia\u2019s] Cultural Diversity Year. We are delighted at Liviko to be able to contribute to the flourishing local cultural life,\u201d said Janek Kalvi<\/strong>, CEO of Liviko. The company is focused on supporting socially and culturally significant areas by sponsoring art, literature, music and sport. The concert is named after the 300-year-old cognac house R\u00e9my Martin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Year\u2019s concert was made possible through the cooperation of Eesti Kontsert, AS Liviko and Estonian Public Broadcasting. The television broadcast was presented by Joonas Hellerma. The concert is available at jupiter.err.ee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
