Vana Tallinn unveils new signature bottle and label

Vana Tallinn’s new bottle and label take inspiration from the rooftops and vaulted passageways of Tallinn’s Old Town. Liviko worked with UK design agency Stranger & Stranger to create a new look for one of Estonia’s most widely exported brands. The taste of the award-winning and much-loved Vana Tallinn liqueur remains unchanged.

“Vana Tallinn has been one of Estonia’s flagship brands since the middle of the last century, and we feel a responsibility to preserve its timeless quality for generations to come. Brands with a long history and strong reputation need to evolve at the right time to remain relevant. Vana Tallinn has always stood out for both its high quality and distinctive design. Loved by Estonians, Vana Tallinn reaches nearly 40 countries around the world and can be found across Europe as well as in Australia and even China. In our neighbouring markets of Finland, Latvia and Lithuania, Vana Tallinn ranks among the very top imported liqueurs,” said Janek Kalvi, CEO of Liviko Group.

“Vana Tallinn has an extraordinary sense of place, so our approach was to build on that heritage rather than reinvent it – drawing inspiration from the iconic rooftops, arches and architectural character of Tallinn’s Old Town. Every crafted detail, from the sculpted bottle to the embossed seal and rich colour palette, was designed to make the brand feel more distinctive and contemporary while remaining unmistakably Vana Tallinn,” said Cosimo Surace, creative director at Stranger & Stranger.

“Just as we carefully select the finest natural ingredients for Vana Tallinn, we took equal care in choosing a partner for its new look. Stranger & Stranger, one of the world’s leading design agencies, helped us create a contemporary design that remains true to Vana Tallinn’s distinctive character. The result is still Vana Tallinn, but with a more modern and elegant appearance. We believe its fresh, more international look will help drive the liqueur’s continued success in export markets,” said Janek Kalvi, CEO of Liviko Group.

The Vana Tallinn bottle evokes a mediaeval tower in Tallinn’s Old Town. The new design retains the familiar roof tiles of Tallinn’s Old Town towers, while the new arched label and the curved forms of the bottle itself echo the Old Town’s medieval vaulted passageways. An embossed glass seal on the front of the bottle echoes the mediaeval wax seals once used to authenticate important documents.

Vana Tallinn’s colour palette draws on the architecture of Tallinn’s Old Town, with the bottle cap taking its terracotta hue from the Old Town rooftops. The towers and rooftops have also inspired the colours of the labels. The 35%, 40% and 45% vol labels come in oxidised copper, terracotta and deep red respectively.

The Vana Tallinn label was last redesigned in 2017 in collaboration with a French agency. The distinctive bottle, inspired by the towers of Tallinn’s Old Town, was introduced in 1965 and last redesigned in 1999. Vana Tallinn liqueur itself was created in 1960.

The taste of Vana Tallinn has remained unchanged over the years, and the liqueur is made exclusively from natural ingredients. It takes almost a month to produce.

Jamaican rum, aromatic spices, citrus and caramel give the liqueur its smooth, exotic flavour. Cinnamon bark lends it an intriguing bitterness and spicy aroma. Vanilla pods, orange, lemon and bitter orange oils, a touch of cinnamon and rum come together to create its unique flavour.
